Project 06

Challenge
Investigate the potential of adiabatic compressed air energy storage as an alternative to battery storage for small- to medium-scale applications. Develop a numerical model capable of predicting system thermodynamic behaviour and key performance metrics and scope a practical system design with the potential for subsequent prototyping.
Engineering Approach
This research commenced with an overview of current energy storage systems to establish where ACAES could potentially compete in relation to size, cost, efficiency and application. A comprehensive thermodynamic numerical model was then developed enabling system behaviour and performance to be investigated across a range of operating conditions. A practical mechanical design was scoped and modelled to assess how the concept could be physically realised.
Outcome
The study established the combinations of scale, application, cost and efficiency for which the proposed ACAES concept could potentially be viable and provided a numerical model for evaluating and optimising future system configurations. A practical system concept was also developed as a basis for further design and prototyping.
