Challenge

A wind turbine blade was to be designed to achieve defined aerodynamic performance while also considering acoustic performance. The composite blade structure was required to withstand the predicted operating loads, including varying wind-speed profiles, cyclic loading and peak-load conditions.

Engineering Approach

A mathematical aerodynamic model and bespoke numerical solver were developed to optimise the blade geometry and aerodynamic performance along its span. Aerodynamic and acoustic considerations were incorporated into the design process. The resulting aerodynamic loads were used to inform the structural design of the blade. Detailed stress and fatigue analysis was undertaken to develop the composite laminate, spar and shear-web structure and ensure adequate structural performance under both normal operating and peak-load conditions.

Outcome

The completed blade design achieved the required aerodynamic and structural performance targets, with the aerodynamic geometry, composite structure and predicted operating loads developed as an integrated design.
